Chapter 166 - 166: 166: The Rong Family’s False Love
So much so that when she heard it, Rong Yan’s expression turned momentarily blank.
She quickly gathered her wits, took a deep breath, walked over, and sat down where Rong Nanfeng had pulled out a chair for her.
The appetizing dishes were brought to the table one after another.
Rong Nanfeng picked up a piece of fish for her and said softly, “I remember you loved this vinegar fish. You mustn’t have had it often abroad—eat more today.”
Rong Weiwei silently fiddled with her own food, watching the person opposite her with envy and spite.
She was jealous of Rong Nanfeng’s attitude toward Rong Yan, yet felt vindicated that, even as his biological daughter, Rong Yan had still been tossed out like trash for five years.
“That was in the past, I don’t like fish anymore,” Rong Yan said lightly as she picked up her chopsticks and moved the fish from her bowl, “Fish is the cheapest overseas. I’ve eaten so much of it that I’m sick of it now.”
Rong Nanfeng watched as she threw the piece of fish he had picked for her into the trash, his square face flashing a mix of embarrassment and annoyance. But he couldn’t find a way to counter her words, only managing to say awkwardly, “Is that so? I had no idea. I thought you still liked it.”
The table, laden with fish dishes, now seemed like a mockery and a slap in the face.
Rong Yan, however, was unperturbed. If it was a slap, let it be; she was speaking the truth. When she was at her poorest, she practically had fish at every meal—those tail pieces full of bones that you could get at a discount late at the supermarket. All her meals depended on those fish. She had long since lost her taste for it, to the point where the smell alone could make her nauseous. She had them to thank for all of it, for sending her abroad without a penny to live on.
At the time, she was pregnant.
A 17 -year-old girl, pregnant, suddenly thrown into a foreign land without a dime to her name—she was lucky not to have starved to death.
The meal was eaten in heavy, awkward silence, Rong Yan barely touching anything.
One hour later, the awkward family dinner finally came to an end. Rong Nanfeng seemed almost eager to get up, pulling out his chair and saying to the person beside him, “Yan’er, come upstairs with me for a moment. I have something to ask you.”
Here it comes.
Rong Yan had been waiting for him to say that.
Rather than feigning false familial affection, she preferred they got straight to the point. There was no need to pretend to be caring parents; it spared everyone the discomfort.
The second floor housed the study. Rong Nanfeng opened the door and walked in first.
Rong Yan followed him into the room.
Upon entering, Rong Nanfeng ordered a servant to bring up two cups of coffee, then sat in his swivel chair with his hands clasped on the desk, looking up at her and saying, “When do you plan to come back?”
“Come back? I don’t understand what Mr. Rong means. Coming back to where?” Rong Yan asked calmly in response.
Her continual defiance and the way she had made him lose face had already made Rong Nanfeng feel that his authority as a father was being challenged.
His face darkened, but he still restrained himself, “Back home. You can’t possibly intend to drift around outside forever, can you?”
“Where are you living now? I’ll have the driver bring your things back!”
She was currently living at Li Shengxiao’s house! Of course, she could not reveal this to the man before her. Without even considering, Rong Yan firmly declined, “No need. I have my own place and don’t plan to move into someone else’s home.”
“What do you mean ‘someone else’s home’?! This is your home!” Rong Nanfeng finally lost his patience, slamming the desk and emphasizing with a furious face, “I know you’re still holding a grudge about what happened five years ago, but enough is enough. You’re not a child anymore; there has to be a limit to everything. I admit I was a bit harsh with you back then, but you had it coming!
I had to discipline you..”
