Chapter 424: Options

Chapter 424: Options

“Like I said, you are a bit too young to understand that,” Zaos replied.

“When I touched that boy, I felt his life moving inside me… why did that happen?” Milliendra asked.

“… I will discover what happened, but you don’t have to worry,” Zaos forced another smile. “See? Mommy and daddy are not scared of you and we can hug as much as we want.”

Milliendra felt comfortable while Zaos and Aleni were hugging her. Still, both of them knew that the problem was far from solved… to make the kids forget the aura that they felt, Zaos asked Aleni to stay with Milliendra in their room for a few days and told everyone that she was sick and needed to stay alone for the time being. He felt bad for lying to the people who respected his words like law, but it couldn’t be helped. Zaos also decided to stay in his office for a few days to focus on finding a solution to that problem instead of delaying it. Still, it seemed he wouldn’t have much time to do that. Nakin appeared in his office as soon as the sunset, and that was unusual for his squad.

“Boss, we might have a problem,” Nakin said.

“What kind of problem?” Zaos asked.

“A suspicious group appeared in the nearest port town and based on their ascent, I concluded that they are from the Sairus kingdom,” Nakin said.

Zaos facepalmed. It seems that those five years of peace finally came to bite Zaos in the ass. The timing for someone of that kingdom to find him couldn’t have been worse… Still, Zaos had prepared for that and had some options. If they really came to look for him, killing them so soon would be the same as revealing where he was to the whole world… Letting them sniff around for too long also was a problem since they would learn too much about his actions.

“Did you get their names?” Zaos asked.

“I think that they are using fake ones, but I asked one of the kids of the town to describe them for me,” Nakin said.

“That was smart,” Zaos said.

“Two of them are tall and slightly grey haired men, one of them is well built, but the other is like a mountain of muscles,” Nakin said. “The other two are women, one had long black hair and the other had light brown hair. The older one has a sharp tongue and is quick to complain about things, the other one is very quiet, but I felt that she is always keeping her senses sharp on her surroundings.”

In the end, the descriptions didn’t tell all that much. There were tons of people that looked like that in the Sairus kingdom. The question was: who would Drannor send in a special mission like that and without any escorts? Few people had the skills to pull that off, and even fewer people would have Drannor’s trust for such a critical mission. After thinking for a while, Zaos understood that he would have to go and make good use of his Evil Eyes. He had practiced that spell for quite a while, and now he could control what the target would see. That was pretty good to traumatize targets and prevent them from spreading information about him. Still, Zaos wanted to reach a point where he could traumatize a target so much that they would forget about the incident.

“Thanks for your report,” Zaos said. “I have an idea, and I will make sure that those will leave the country without causing problems to any of our group. By the way, have you guys heard or felt any presence like that one recently?”

“No… we have been moving around quite a lot, but we didn’t find any presence like the master of the organization,” Nakin replied.

“I see… well, have some days off before leaving again,” Zaos said after a long sigh.

“Yes, sir,” Nakin said and then left the room.

Zaos sighed again. The demons have been too quiet in the last five years… it was because he killed three of them one after the other, and that raised their guard? In any case, it seemed like one bad thing was happening after the other…

Since Zaos didn’t want to leave Milliendra alone in this difficult time for her, he decided to leave at night and then return as soon as possible. In the last few years, he has been only killing in secret, and he only killed assholes, but maybe it was time to return to the old days where he would cut down everyone that stands on his path.

“It should be fine… even if Drannor doesn’t receive a message from those guys, it will take a while for him to find me,” Zaos nodded to himself. “A few months if he uses ships and a few years if he doesn’t… If I were him, I would contact Orleand and ask for some ships and soldiers.”

Even ships were no longer a problem to Zaos. He could sink several of them easily. The problem was the war itself. Milliendra was becoming more aware of her surroundings as she grew and if Zaos left to join the war, she would eventually connect the dots.

When Zaos returned to his room, he noticed that Milliendra had already fallen asleep even though it was pretty early. Maybe that was a good opportunity, but Zaos couldn’t help but feel depressed. When he explained what he had just heard to Aleni, she also got a bit down.

“Well… it was bound to happen,” Aleni said.

“I built this place considering that one day we will have to fight to protect it,” Zaos said. “But now I am starting to think that this might not be a good idea.”

“I can understand why you would think that…” Aleni said. “I am not sure what we should do either… perhaps fleeing again and leaving the result of our work to Kat?”
