Chapter 264 - The Man Who Has Love in His Heart
Chapter 264: The Man Who Has Love in His Heart
The arrested members seemed to be brainwashed. No matter how the police interrogated them, they refused to sell out their leader.
“Is Xiangxiang in danger now?” He Wei frowned.
“This is a profile our psychological experts gave.” Captain Luo gave a document to Yun Xiangxiang. “This man is highly intelligent, a master of disguise, and very affable. Nobody would suspect him of anything. He’s also a cruel and vindictive individual.”
The police gleaned their characteristics through the previous heists. They already had everyone that matched the list of characteristics, save for the head honcho.
“The only trait this man has is his jewelry obsession.” Captain Luo continued, “We’ve cordoned off their base and investigated the members’ financial situations.”
They had committed more than four heists over ten years. Every time they had a new member, they would be given an initiation mission. But since the execution was different, nobody was able to link them together.
Their assets reached eight figures in terms of value. They had more than enough money, yet they kept on doing the heists. That meant they were not in it just for the money.
“We’ll find out where the stolen jewelry went. Hopefully, we can get more clues.” Captain Luo proposed, “Miss Yun, I suggest that you accept our protection.”
“I want you to protect my family.” Yun Xiangxiang wasn’t worried about herself. “Also, can I see that security guard?”
Captain Luo hesitated, but he agreed in the end. “I’ll make the arrangements.”
These people were caught red-handed. They had not stood trial yet, but it wouldn’t be long until they did. The security guard was called Dai Hua.
Yun Xiangxiang sat opposite him. He kept quiet, nor did he look at Yun Xiangxiang.
“Do you know why I suspected you?” Yun Xiangxiang asked.
Dai Hua kept his head down, pretending Yun Xiangxiang did not exist.
“Because your gaze is calm,” Yun Xiangxiang didn’t mind his silence.
Dai Hua looked at Yun Xiangxiang with mockery in his eyes.
“I’m confident in my looks. I don’t think anyone wouldn’t be surprised when they see me for the first time,” Yun Xiangxiang talked as if he was a friend. “Unless their view on aesthetics is different.”
There might be loads of perverts in the world, but there were also people who would be unfazed by beauty.
But those who were unfazed and unsurprised were rare, especially for those who lived at the bottom of society, where beauty was a rare sight. They would need an incredible will to look at beauty as if it were a regular thing.
“You could ignore my looks even at your subconscious level. I think you must have some history,” Yun Xiangxiang probed.
She wasn’t narcissistic, but humans were visual animals, including her. Even when she didn’t have any ideas toward Song Mian when she first met him, she would still look at him from time to time.
Everyone loved beautiful things.
Yun Xiangxiang wouldn’t make this guess if Dai Hua grew up with gorgeous ladies around him just like He Shen was.
But Dai Hua didn’t grow up like that. That reaction to Yun Xiangxiang, or lack thereof, was out of the norm. That only meant one thing: Dai Hua had his own irreplaceable, most beautiful woman he cherished.
When a dedicated man met their unforgettable love, nobody else would be able to enter their sights.
Yun Xiangxiang didn’t think a guy who could ignore other girls just for his one true love would be too bad.
“Is she gorgeous?” Yun Xiangxiang talked about his lover.
“Not as much as you,” Dai Hua finally spoke. He had a gentle voice.
“You have someone you love dearly. I’m curious as to what drove you to crime.”
Dai Hua was silent again. Only Yun Xiangxiang and Dai Hua were in the room. The silence in the claustrophobic space was depressing.
Yun Xiangxiang wasn’t in a hurry. She waited patiently. After ten minutes or so, Dai Hua spoke.
His voice was hoarse. There was also despair in it, “Her illness needs a lot of money to be treated.”
“What illness?” Yun Xiangxiang asked.
Dai Hua glanced at her. “I don’t know either. I remember something about myelophthisis.”
Yun Xiangxiang started paying attention to some diseases after she knew Song Mian. Whenever Song Mian was working beside her, she would take a look at the documents. Myelophthisis was a blood-related disease.
It referred to an anemia in which the hematopoietic function was impaired because of the bone marrow being displaced by fibrosis, tumors, or granulomas.
“What caused it?” Yun Xiangxiang asked gently.
Yun Xiangxiang’s concern warmed Dai Hua’s heart. He wasn’t as angry anymore. “Tumor.”
“The bone marrow is displaced by a tumor?” Yun Xiangxiang added.
“Yes.”
Yun Xiangxiang’s heart sank. Song Mian mentioned this disease before. If a tumor caused it, then the chances of treatment would be slim.
“Can you tell me which hospital she’s in?” Yun Xiangxiang asked.
Dai Hua got his guard up.
Yun Xiangxiang looked at him, “I know an amazing doctor. I can’t guarantee a successful treatment, but I will help wherever I can.”
“What do you need me to do?” Dai Hua didn’t think Yun Xiangxiang would lie to him.
“You know what I need you to do,” Yun Xiangxiang didn’t hide her motive.
Dai Hua lowered his head. His hands were rubbing against the chilly cuffs. “I want your help, I do. Even if it’s hopeless, but I can’t lie to you for that. To be honest, I don’t have the right to contact the boss right now. I only saw him from the back before, but...”
Dai Hua recalled something, “He wears a thumb ring. Brother Zhan said that the boss loves this jade ring the most. He told them that the ring was his reason for existence. He would rather die than lose it.”
“In other words, he would never take it off unless he is dead.”
“Tell me, where is she?” Yun Xiangxiang asked again.
Dai Hua knew who “she” meant.” He looked at her in puzzlement, “Why?”
She didn’t have any reason to help him. He didn’t have any more clues that he could give.
“You are a cautious person. Why did you tell the cops you know I leaked your operation?”
They would have succeeded if not because of her. He knew his partners had their eyes on Yun Xiangxiang, but he still told the police to remind Yun Xiangxiang of the danger.
“You haven’t fully turned your back on your conscience.”
