Chapter 137: A Life Bet
The surrounding warriors were taken aback by the courageous words as if the invisible momentum had instantly turned into a visible wall, which kept pushing them back and forth.
"Demon Fighter?" For the first time, Glan was surprised at the momentum. He couldn’t be a Level 10 Warrior! He was more than this... He must be a Demon Fighter!
But... Glan frowned! The young man was not even in his twenties, so how could he be a Demon Fighter? No wonder why he was so arrogant on this death line. If he were a Demon Fighter, he would be qualified to do this kind of thing!
Meanwhile, Caeller stepped back at the overwhelming pressure as Glen reached out to hold his back. As the boss in charge of Cae Family, it would be an absolute farce if he was intimidated by a mere boy. He could not fall back even if the adversary was a Demon Fighter.
The rebuke of Qian Jin turned into a cold provocative smile. "Your Excellency headmaster, since it is a duel, how about we add a bet for entertainment?"
Although Caeller was a bit worried, he was reluctant to show weakness. He was fully aware that it was the entire Cae family that was on his shoulders. He was not about to be bested.
"What do you want to play?" Caeller kept a stiff smile, "It indeed is a tradition in the Zence Empire to add an extra bet to the duel."
"Well, let’s not make it a big deal. I’ll add two things to the little bet." Qian Jin grabbed a jar next to the coffin. "Inside this jar is a certificate carrying all the assets of the Roll Family." Hearing this, the ugly and ferocious face of Caeller suddenly quivered, and his small eyes were kindled with greed. The ultimate purpose of all this trouble was to take over the Roll Family. He was so thrilled that after all these days, there was finally a silver lining. Even if his nephew Cage successfully married Rosella, it didn’t assure that they could capture the prey. Nothing was more assuring than the certificate.
Qian Jin raised his right hand and pointed it at his head with great resolution. His face illuminated a chill, like it was from the icy lake. He said in an extremely calm voice, "Here is my head. Mr. Caeller, first of all, I want you to wager the same amount of property of the Roll Family, and the other is your head against mine. If I lose the duel, you can take the Roll Family and my life, but if you lose, except for the property, I want your head, too."
The fat man’s heart suddenly pumped, and his scalp shrank again and again because of fear. A gamble on their lives! Moreover, this young man said it in such a calm way, which was more terrifying than a bully with a coward’s heart. A faint trace of madness quickly spread throughout the yard.
"Of course," the volume of the cool man suddenly increased. "I do not care if the stake is too high, but I just don’t know if the Cae Family dares to take it or not. If they have no courage, I do not mind changing it to a small one." An interesting smile appeared on the solemn look of Sabonis. The words sounded so familiar to what Caeller had said to Qian Jin just a minute before. Qian Jin was paying the petty man back with his own words.
"This young man, Qian Jin, is overbearing enough. What’s more, he has guts and wisdom. Although I do not know what unexpected awesome cards he has in his hand, I’m sure he’s going to win this duel." As time went by, Sabonis thought more and more highly of this young man. He no longer saw him as a young warrior, but a peer who had an almost equal status.
A Demon Fighter at such a young age! There was a bright future waiting for him...
Sabonis quickly made up his mind that if Qian Jin should win and live after the duel, he really needed to reconsider how to choose between the two families.
A life bet! Caeller had never thought about it. Moreover, the same amount of property as the Roll Family was still a huge sum of money, even if they were not as well-off as the Cae Family!
"Mr. Caeller," said Glan with his body slightly bent, "Trust me, and remember, you still have young Master Cage and Mage Glenn Pan."
"Yes! Right!" Caeller once again recovered, "Yes, I’ve got Cage, Glenn Pan and Mr. Glan. How could I lose?"
Glan stood straight in a chuckle and stared at Qian Jin with some secret thoughts hovering in his head, "Master Cage shall play for Cae Family in tomorrow’s duel, so I will have no chance to stand on the stage. I shall make a sudden attack on Qian Jin this evening to consume most of his warrior energy in case there’s something wrong in the duel! I’ll teach him a lesson first, and then the duel will be a piece of cake for Master Cage..." Glen was so proud of his decision that he could not help but crack out a sneer...
"Since Qian Jin is interested in this and he is now in charge of the Roll Family..." Looking over to Rosella who was hiding behind Qian Jin, Caeller face crept up with a slow, acidic smile. He showed his little yellowish teeth, "I’m in." While Rosella slowly stepped out from the shadow of her protector with eyes fixed on Qian Jin, she softly said, "Any decision of his is mine."
"Haha..." Caeller turned to Sabonis and said, "Dear Mayor, the most unbiased man and the most esteemed man in the city of Oakland, would you please do us a favor being a witness to the whole duel?" Sabonis had never hated Caeller so much! He looked at the promising young man nearby and the fat ingratiating face in front of himself, regretting having become involved in these affairs.
If only it only concerned this young man Qian Jin! However, it involved the fireball Fabreidis, who was possibly Qian Jin’s master. Although Caeller had the backing of the entire Cae family, Fabreidis also had all the warrior unions from the whole province covering his back!
"Well, I will take it." The mayor sighed since now it was impossible to drop out. He just hoped that it would end as soon as possible and after all this, he would be completely neutral. Hopefully, it would have nothing to do with him no matter what happened between these two families.
Caeller bowed to the mayor with a pleased smile and while looking at Fabreidis, he said, "Well, Your Excellency, if you’ll excuse us we have to go back and prepare for tomorrow’s duel."
Sabonis did not have the patience to have another word with Caeller. He nodded in silence in response, and Fabreidis did not look at Caeller either.
Glan glanced at the city guardian provokingly. With one palm clutching his big sword, he once again made a cold humph and headed out of the yard.
"Mr. Glan..." Caeller whispered when they out of the courtyard, "What you just did seems a little rude to the city guardian. I’m worried he might do something against our Cae Family..."
"City guardian?" Glan’s full beard moved with his disdainful twitching mouth. His bell-shaped eyes revealed nothing but scorn, "I just want him to suddenly attack me on the spot, so I can find an excuse to teach him a lesson! When I beat him, I’ll replace him as the city guardian of Oakland! Then, everything will become much easier for the Cae Family, too! "
Caeller paused surprisingly, "Are you confident that you can beat the city guardian?"
"Hum!" Glan habitually issued his humph, "Why arenn’t I? We are both Demon Fighters, except that he has entered the realm a few years earlier than me! I’m 100% sure I can lay him down from the position of the Oakland City Guardian if we got into a real fight! "
"If so," Caeller thoughtfully sat on the carriage, "If that’s the case, then after the duel is over, I’ll find a way to help Mr. Glan obtain the chance to challenge him."
Glan answered in ecstasy, "When that day comes, I will certainly pay you back greatly. When we join hands, there is a great shot that Mr. Caeller will become the mayor!"
Hearing this flattery, the little rat eyes of Caeller flashed, and his round face also threw out a longing look, "At that time, let’s have fun again, okay?"
"Deal!" Glan bent his arm around Caeller’s shoulder as if they had already conquered this city.
While in the yard, Sabonis was still talking to Fabreidis. "For the duel, I will treat both sides absolutely equally. Please rest assured and get prepared! Now if you’ll excuse me..."
Fabreidis responded with a signaling nod, "I believe the noble and unsullied character of the mayor." No wonder why Sabonis was the mayor! He didn’t even show a bit of embarrassment at Fabreidis’s satire, but rather revealed a readily-accepting expression. Even Qian Jin was stunned and he wondered if his Zhanmadao would be able to cut through his thick skin.
Outside the yard on the road carpeted with mourning white silk, the mayor’s carriage let out some creaking sounds.
Fabreidis slowly walked over the death line that was still on the ground. Standing in front of Rollin’s coffin, he slightly bowed and restored his tall and straight posture.
Rosella was surprised with her lips parting gracefully. She couldn’t believe what was happening. Although it was just a slight bow, it meant a lot. A bow was the best a city guardian could do, even if he were at the mourning hall of the mayor Sabonis! And now, the guardian was bowing to her deceased brother!
