Chapter 111: Just Great
At the last moment, a concentration of Magic Energy grabbed Alvin's leg, pulling him back to the ground. Alvin looked to the side and saw Linfel there. "What are you doing?!"
Linfel shrugged while he used his Magic Energy to take control of the Star Rays, who got close to Alvin. Otherwise, they would pull Alvin into space as well. "You were going to kill the Star Rays, right? If you did, you would be disqualified. Obviously, I stopped you. Now, concentrate and suppress your Magic Energy again."
"Fuck that! I have to help Milia!" Alvin complained.
Linfel looked in Milia's direction and spoke. "Do you think she needs your help? Pay attention, idiot. Can you see she attacking any of the Star Rays?"
"Uh?" Alvin quickly calmed down and looked as well. Sure enough, Milia and Nori were still. Nori was a flame sword, but at the moment, barely any flame came out of him. As for Milia, she just kept her eyes closed while a slightly big ball of Magic Energy floated in front of her body.
Then, a Star Ray approached and ate the ball, ignoring Milia. The moment it happened, Milia slightly touched its back, catching a Yellow Token. That kind of occurrence continued a few more times. Milia generated another small concentration of magic Energy near her body and that attracted the Star Rays.
"She... is baiting the Star Rays? But why is she floating in midair then?" Alvin was confused. "Wouldn't it be too risky? The Star Rays might catch her at any moment. Also, you said she was being pulled away."
Linfel faintly smiled. "But she is. The reason she is in midair is so that she can attract more Star Rays. She let them take her for a moment and then suppressed her Magic Energy. She wasn't as good as you at suppressing her Magic Energy, but because she created those baits, the baits caught more of the Star Rays' attention than her body or Nori's. Now, she just needs to keep repeating that process.
Of course, it is quite tiresome, so she should come back down soon."
Linfel was right. A few minutes later, Milia took a deep breath and completely stopped circulating her Magic Energy together with Nori. The two of them worked together, using their connection to better look after each other.
The Star Rays, not being able to feel their magic Energy, quickly lost interest. The asteroid might be in midspace, but it still had a very slight gravity. So, very slowly, Milia and Nori began to fall down back to the asteroid. It took another few minutes, but they were back to the ground eventually.
Alvin approached, relieved she was fine. "You gave me a scare there."
"Ah!" Milia was the one to get a scare this time, though. She was so concentrated on her Magic Energy circulation that Alvin's sudden comment near her made her lose her control.
Immediately, several Star Rays came down, aiming to catch Milia and Nori again. They didn't get to learn from Linfel how to suppress their Magic Energy properly, so it was indeed a hard task for both of them.
"Idiot! Look what you have done!" Nori cursed.
Milia and Nori got nervous. They were already tired, so they had to focus again. However, the Star Rays were right there. Without another choice, Nori burst with lames while Milia circulated her Magic Energy. They would have to kill the Star Rays now since it was better than dying out in space.
Alvin didn't expect that and felt guilty, so he also prepared to attack while circulating his Magic Energy. He could control his Magic Energy easily, but he couldn't do that for Milia and Nori.
Yet, just as they were about to attack, Linfel's words echoed around.
"Sit!"
In the next second, all the Star Rays that had caught Milia and Nori's Magic Energy presence repeated the same actions as Alvin saw a while ago.
Linfel approached one of them and patted its body. "Good boys and girls. Now, go find someone else to eat, okay? Don't bother my friends here."
As if they understood Linfel's words, all the Star Rays around left, leaving quite a gap in the middle where Linfel's group was staying.
Milia and Nori looked at that with wide-open eyes. "Is that..."
Linfel nodded. "You know about it already."
Back when Linfel explained about himself, he also explained how he took control of the soldier's body. Milia and Nori could only guess he did the same thing now... but not to such an extent. He controlled tens of Star Rays at once! "You truly are quite ridiculous."
"That's rude. I just saved your asses, you know?" Linfel sighed in response.
Milia and Nori finally had the chance to properly calm down and suppress their Magic Energy correctly. With Linfel nearby, they felt safe.
Linfel saw that and floated away, signaling Alvin to follow him. Alvin, of course, could only do as Linfel asked. "Shouldn't you stay close in case they need?"
"I shouldn't have even helped to start with," Linfel explained. "She is grasping the meaning of this exam about Magic Energy control, so the best is to leave her alone. I only intervened because you were the reason they were almost caught, so it wasn't fair."
"That's because you also said they were going to become food soon!" Alvin complained once again.
"Oh! Right! I did say that, didn't I? Sorry, sorry. Guess I was overthinking it." Linfel didn't seem very apologetic, though.
Alvin's mouth twitched. It was obvious Linfel did that on purpose. "You are hateful!"
Linfel didn't mind. "And you are impulsive. You should have analyzed the situation first instead of doing what you did. If you had truly jumped to save Milia, how would you come back? Just how many Star Rays would you have attracted after you started killing some? Above all, you almost made Milia fail her exam, not to mention you two would end up dying together instead."
"This..." Alvin didn't have an answer for that. "I will pay more attention next time."
Linfel nodded, satisfied. "You better do. Now, go collect more tokens, and be careful. My helping just now was just because of the circumstances. I won't help if you screw up on your own again. Hum...
I need to come up with a training method to help with your impulses."
Alvin felt a chill on his back. Somehow, he felt he would hate this new training as much as all the others. 'Just great...'
