Chapter 342: 342, you know what you look like, don’t you have any self-awareness?
**
Half an hour later.
Su Wenwen arrived at the canteen and met up with Zhao Qianqian.
Feeling proud as a peacock upon seeing her, Zhao Qianqian laughed, “Let’s head upstairs for lunch; I’m going to treat you to a feast today!”
Su Wenwen merely gave her a glance, “Let’s go.”
There weren’t many people in the upstairs cafeteria, so Su Wenwen let Zhao Qianqian order four dishes and a soup.
While they were waiting for their order, they chatted and laughed together, until a burst of unpleasant remarks echoed from the next table.
“Who does she think she is?”
“She’s not even pretty!”
“She must have rigged the voting to make it to the top!”
“So shady!”
“Shameless…”
At first, Su Wanwan didn’t pay them any mind.
They were sitting in a corner, and a screen separated them from the rest of the canteen.
Being unable to see the people speaking, she didn’t think they were talking about her.
Until suddenly, a familiar voice erupted, “What are you talking about!”
It was Bai Ruwei!
Su Wanwan quickly leaned forward to look.
She saw Bai Ruwei standing at the table behind the screen, angrily saying to a group of girls, “It’s utterly disgusting how you talk behind people’s back!”
“And who are you?” a short-haired girl stood up immediately.
Bai Ruwei continued, “Each voting IP is recorded on the forum; you can only cast one vote from one IP each day. If you’re accusing someone of rigging votes, do you have any evidence?”
“Hahaha.” Another girl, with dyed yellow hair, laughed. “What kind of moralist popped out of nowhere? Who we choose to talk about is none of your business!”
“Yeah, what’s with the nosy interference?”
“Can’t you see how poor you look? The total cost of everything you’re wearing couldn’t sum up to 200 yuan!”
“Your shoes have holes in them!”
“Hahaha! It’s hilarious!”
Flushed and furious, Bai Ruwei defended, “Wanwan is not like that. She’s beautiful and kind-hearted; she deserves her rank. You are all just a bunch of jealous uglies, so mean…”
The girls grew angry upon being called uglies, one of them even reaching out to shove Bai Ruwei, “Who are you calling ugly?”
Bai Ruwei staggered, nearly falling down. She reached out to grab something to stabilize herself, and ended up pulling the hair of the girl sitting next to her.
The girl screamed in pain and, after securing her hair back, stood up and slapped Bai Ruwei in the face, “Where did this pauper crawl out from? Your hands smell like garlic. You’re disgusting, and got my hair dirty!”
Noticing a small stain on her white sweater, she was even more infuriated. She once again lifted her hand to slap Bai Ruwei.
However, someone suddenly pulled Bai Ruwei back, causing the slap to miss its target.
Instead, she was forcefully pushed on the shoulder.
The push was so forceful that she stumbled backward, and her waist hit the edge of the table. The pain was accompanied by her hand landing directly into a dish of hot food.
“Ah!”
The girl cried out in pain from the burn, “Who are you?”
When it dawned on her that their defender was Su Wanwan.
The same girl… the star they were just gossiping about!
They were all young women in their twenties, already sheepish about being caught out gossiping, and now frightened by Su Wanwan’s sudden aggression.
Their bold expressions instantly shrank back.
“Are you okay?” Su Wanwan asked Bai Ruwei.
Bai Ruwei’s cheek was red from the slap, her hair was a little messy, but upon hearing that, she hurriedly shook her head, “I’m fine, Wanwan, what are you doing here?”
Su Wanwan spun around to face the girls, “Who are you to judge my appearance? A bunch of oddballs, hideous faces, is there no mirror in your house? Do you really believe that wearing gold and silver makes you superior? Without parents, what are you worth!”
The girls dared not respond angrily.
Su Wanwan knew that most students in this prestigious university were children from wealthy families, except for a few who made it through their own hard work and merit.
She was certainly aware of the college’s deeply ingrained hierarchical attitudes —rich kids looking down on the poor, children of officials looking down on the children of the rich, and so on.
The campus was just a miniaturized version of the broader society, with its entrenched hierarchy of contempt.
Plunged deeply in her studies, she had always avoided the drama. She didn’t spend much time on campus, and had hardly mingled with her classmates, so this was the first time she witnessed such bullying, especially targeting someone she knew.
Her face hardened, and with a cold, scornful voice, she said: “Gossiping behind people’s backs and even daring to assault someone? I’d like to see you try that again!”
The girls didn’t dare to eat anymore. They were ready to flee.
“Stop!” Su Wanwan shouted, causing them to flinch.
“You think you can just hit someone and run off? Is it that easy?”
Bai Ruwei was trying to stop Su Wenwen, “No need, Wanwan. I’m okay.”
“Shut up!” Su Wanwan snapped at her, “All of you must apologize, and pay the medical expenses in full! If not, I’m reporting it to the school leadership!”
Zhao Qianqian had also joined them by this time, “Wanwan, are you okay?”
She then started backing her friend up, “The votes for Wanwan were willingly given by those who admired her dancing. She fairly won the dance competition and hence the title of the department flower.. If you have any problems, why didn’t you campaign earlier? What’s the point of backbiting now?”
