Chapter 419: 421: Arbitrary Law Enforcement
At the city entrance, everyone observed that each entrance and every wall were guarded, and the people inside were not allowed to leave casually.
It seemed that they were already aware of the Lizard Water Monster’s presence in the vicinity, preying on humans.
“Let me in, why won’t you believe me? I’ve never done anything to harm everyone,” a man in tattered clothes pleaded at the city gate.
The City Gate Guardians seemed to recognize the man, but their faces showed wariness and even a hint of disgust.
“But the City Master is still dead, they all say you plotted against him. To prevent others from exposing you, you killed all your companions,” the Captain of the Guard said with hesitation.
“Ge Zhong, others might not understand me, but do you really think I did it? The City Master was like a mountain of kindness to me. He’s dead; how could I just stand by? I’ve always wanted to find the person who killed him,” the man in tattered clothing said.
“For now, come in. We’re also investigating this matter,” Ge Zhong said.
The man nodded, dragging his injured body toward the city.
Minglang was still some distance from the city gate but he took note of this scene.
He just didn’t know what had happened between them.
Just as they were about to enter the city, suddenly there was a thunderous noise from the straight road behind, as if tens of thousands of wild horses were galloping.
Everyone turned around to see a group of people in black, riding on Iron Armor Mane Beasts, charging toward them menacingly. They almost ran over Minglang’s group in the middle of the road without a second glance.
This kind of arrogant behavior was as if they were telling you, if you couldn’t dodge, you deserved it!
The others quickly stepped to the sides of the road. The group in black, riding Iron Armor Mane Beasts, charged straight to the city gate. The leader was a man in his thirties wielding a long animal whip.
His Iron Armor Mane Beast almost charged up to the faces of the guards. The leader swung his whip forcefully through the air and questioned the Captain of the Guard, Ge Zhong: “Have you seen the fugitive?”
“Fugitive?” Ge Zhong feigned ignorance.
“He could only have fled here. Yellow Leaf City is a vassal of our Yan Clan, so you should be well aware that harboring a death row fugitive of our Yan Clan can lead to the execution of your entire family!” the whip-wielding man said.
“Could you describe the death row inmate? After all, there are quite a few people entering the city now,” Captain of the Guard Ge Zhong said.
“Crack!!!!!”
Suddenly, a whip lashed out, striking Ge Zhong directly in the face.
Ge Zhong’s face was immediately torn open, blood flowing from a clear trace from his cheek to his eye socket, horrifically severe!
“I’m the one asking you!” the whip-wielding man shouted angrily.
“My lord, please calm your anger, calm your anger!” the other guards hurriedly knelt down.
Ge Zhong, having been lashed by the whip for no reason, dared not show his anger and had to kneel like the others, saying, “It’s my fault, I have not seen any prisoners entering the city.”
“Crack!!!!!”
Suddenly, another vicious whip struck down, this time hitting Ge Zhong directly on the forehead.
The back of Ge Zhong’s head was a bright red, and his entire head had been forcefully knocked against the ground due to the immense power.
“We’ve chased the fugitive all the way here, yet you failed to stop and capture them. What kind of guard are you!” the whip-bearing man from the Yan Clan said.
“This lowly one… deserves death,” Ge Zhong uttered with difficulty.
“Take him away,” the man with the whip commanded.
At the command, several members of the Yan Clan dressed in black immediately leaped down from their Iron Armor Mane Beasts and, with shackles already prepared, locked up Ge Zhong, who was lying on the ground. They then dragged him away without mercy.
The other guards of Yellow Leaf City showed expressions of astonishment, not understanding why these people from the Yan Clan were taking away their Captain of the Guard.
“Sir, Ge Zhong is our Captain of the Guard. What crime has he committed?” an older guard asked.
“Shackle him as well,” the man with the whip pointed to the speaking elder guard and ordered.
The older guard tried to resist, but the black-clothed members of the Yan Clan were extremely powerful, with several being Divine and Mortal beings. They knocked the older guard to the ground, beating him until he spat blood, before finally shackling him. They didn’t bother to lift him up but instead dragged him away.
For a moment, the other guards dared not speak a word!
“Those who know it’s the Yan Clan think one thing; those who don’t might mistake it for bandits storming the city. Such barbaric actions,” Lu Wenye muttered under her breath.
It was clear that Lu Wenye didn’t know much about Divine and Mortal beings.
She hadn’t realized that some Divine and Mortal beings had exceedingly sharp hearing.
The man with the whip turned his head, his piercing gaze fixed on Lu Wenye.
“Since when do the likes of you lowlifes have the right to criticize our Yan Clan? Slap yourself until I’m satisfied, or I’ll shackle you as well,” the whip-bearing man snorted coldly and commanded.
“Big brother, esteemed sir, we are from the Dragon Taming High Court. We were commissioned to come here and eliminate the overrun Lizard Water Monsters. She didn’t mean to criticize you gentlemen; I apologize to you on her behalf,” Hong Hao bowed in a hurry and said.
“Dragon Taming High Court, be more careful in the future!” Seeing that these people weren’t commoners, the man with the whip just snorted coldly and didn’t pursue the matter further.
Captain of the Guard Ge Zhong, along with another older guard, were both shackled and held in an iron cage atop an Iron Armor Mane Beast.
The other city gate guards were completely panicked, not knowing how to respond.
Many people were watching from a distance, but they all stood far away.
The guards represented the authoritative power of law enforcement in a city, but before the people of the Yan Clan, they were no different from the lower classes of plebeians. They could be beaten and captured on a whim, not to mention ordinary citizens without any official positions.
“Do you think I, Yan He, look like a fool? I’ll give you one last chance; where is the death row escapee who fled here? If you cannot answer, I won’t hesitate to interrogate every single person at this city gate!” the man with the whip said with utter coldness.
The city gate keepers were all terrified by this cruel demeanor.
After a while, finally, one of the guards spoke up. He pointed towards a house not far behind the city gate, the place where guards normally rested when switching shifts.
Narrowing his eyes, Yan He motioned to several people to search inside that house.
Li Shaoying and Chen Bai were both rather timid, so they urged everyone to hurry into the city and not to linger here.
The group continued on their way into the city, no longer concerning themselves with the incident.
Lu Wenye had barely muttered a word under her breath and trouble had found her; who knew if standing there any longer would result in them all being shackled as well.
