Chapter 136: Dinosaur Attack I - Aggression
Garnt, realizing the urgency of the situation, took matters into his own hands. He sprinted towards one of the ballistas, shouting commands to his comrades.
"Focus on the eyes! Aim for its vulnerable spots, everyone! Don\'t give up. We just have to land one good attack and it will go down."
Garnt ordered his men to swiftly load a giant arrow into the ballista, his eyes locked onto the approaching dinosaur. With practised precision, he aimed and released the projectile.
It was the perfect shot from Garnt, as he had more practice than anyone in the village since he is the master of this weapon being the one who first understood the whole mechanism.
The effect wind had on the arrow and the possible power of the ballista, he took all of this into his consideration when trying to fire his arrow.
"Perfect!" As soon as the giant arrow left the ballista, Garnt murmured under his breath. The massive arrow hurtled through the air, finding its mark in the eye of the oncoming threat.
A deafening roar of pain echoed as the dinosaur staggered, momentarily blinded by the attack. The villagers cheered, encouraged by the success of Garnt\'s bold move.
"You did it, Patriarch!"
"We knew it had to be you."
"Long live our patriarch!"
The crowd started to cheer, thinking things were going rather fine for them. However, their victory was short-lived.
The dinosaur started to growl like it was on the verge of dying while shaking its body left and right without showing any restraints since it lost its vision.
The wounded creature, driven by sheer instinct and fury, thrashed its tail wildly. The powerful swing crashed into the village wall, shattering it into pieces. Panic spread as debris rained down, and some villagers found themselves caught in the destructive aftermath.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhh~ my leg,"
"Someone help me,"
Some of the warriors, as well as normal villagers who were escaping to a safe area, shouted as they got caught up in the attack.
"Help the injured! Rebuild the barricade! We can\'t let our guard down!" Garnt shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. Villagers rushed to assist their fallen comrades, frantically trying to repair the damaged defences.
As the dinosaur writhed in pain, Garnt seized the opportunity to organize a counterattack.
"Load the ballistas again! Aim for its weakened side! We can\'t let it recover!"
The defenders, fueled by a renewed determination, unleashed another barrage of giant arrows. This time, the shots found their mark on the injured side of the dinosaur. Roars of agony filled the air as the creature struggled to withstand the relentless assault.
It slowly started to realize that trying to act sane in front of these pesky little beings was costing a lot of pain, and suddenly it opened its eyes to see the wooden ballista.
Despite being unable to communicate like humans, dinosaurs possessed brainpower equivalent to or greater than that of humans. Recognizing the first crucial step, the dinosaur knew it had to break the ballista and launch a relentless attack on Garnt, who played a central role in this assault.
Garnt, ever the strategist, continued to direct the battle. "Coordinate your attacks! Weaken its legs, and we might bring it down!"
The defenders followed Garnt\'s orders, targeting the vulnerable joints of the dinosaur. With each successful hit, the creature\'s movements became more sluggish. It became evident that the villagers were gaining the upper hand in this unexpected clash between man and beast.
But that was until the village square descended into chaos as the wounded dinosaur, fueled by a surge of primal rage, broke free from its momentary weakness. Its massive form charged toward the village with a newfound speed, leaving the defenders stunned.
It knew that being aggressive was the only move that could help it to gain the advantage.
"Incoming, it\'s furious! Brace yourselves!" one warrior shouted, but the warning came too late.
In a burst of superhuman agility, the dinosaur darted towards the ballistas. The defenders scrambled to reload again to attack, but the creature was faster. With a sickening crunch, it clamped its jaws around one of the ballistic, tearing through wood and metal. The operator, caught in the violent assault, let out a horrifying scream as the dinosaur\'s powerful bite crushed both the machine and the unfortunate soul operating it.
A lake of blood dropped from its mouth with the remaining organs of the villager, which was a horrifying scene for everyone to witness and it really engraved fear into the hearts of the people.
The other defenders stood frozen, their faces painted with shock and terror. Garnt, too, watched in disbelief as the situation spiralled out of control.
The wounded dinosaur roared, a sound that echoed with fury and echoed through the village. Blood dripped from its wounds, further emphasizing its relentless determination. It turned its attention to Garnt, who stood amidst the chaos.
Garnt obviously felt that he was being locked down by the creature because he was the head of this battle that most people relied on.
[Garnt, run!]
Eva shouted worried that something might happen, and she wasn\'t the only person who was worried about him.
"Garnt, look out!" Ayra\'s voice pierced through the tumult as the dinosaur swung its tail with devastating force, aiming directly at him. Garnt, realizing the impending danger, knew he couldn\'t escape in time.
But before the tail could make contact, a group of brave warriors leapt in front of Garnt, shielding him from the lethal strike. The impact was tremendous, and the warriors grunted in pain as they were sent sprawling along with Garnt. Ayra, witnessing the sacrifice, felt a chill down her spine.
"Garnt!" she cried, rushing towards the fallen leader. The wounded dinosaur, not satisfied with the havoc it had wrought, redirected its attention towards the escaping villagers.
Ayra knew she had to take charge in Garnt\'s absence, but she also had to go and treat her husband. It was a hard decision for her, but seeing Unami and Kiriah both running in Garnt\'s direction, she knew it was time for her to be responsible for the whole thing.
With determination in her eyes, she rallied the remaining defenders.
"Protect the villagers! We can\'t let it reach them!" she commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos.
The remaining defenders, shaken but not defeated, regrouped under Ayra\'s leadership and they tried to draw the other ballista to attack.
"Draw the weapons!" She shouted, showing she was indeed old Arya, able to dominate any battlefield. The creature was too close for them to use the trebuchet, so the only option was to either use a ballista or use their normal weapons to attack.
\'Is it really wise to get close to this creature? But we don\'t have any options. I\'m sure if Garnt was here, he would also take the same decision.\'
Ayra was thinking about the best possible situation and she had to agree that her husband was indeed amazing to always take the lead without doubting any of his decisions.
\'Garnt, what would you do in a situation like this? How should I proceed and lead these people? Please tell me,\'
For a moment, she felt helpless without her husband and knew he was indeed the beacon of light in her life, and the images of their daughter started to flash before her eyes.
\'If I die here, will Guni be fine? I\'m pretty sure Garnt would be able to raise her into a beautiful girl. But I want to see her. I want to stay by her side and watch her grow. I don\'t want to die here, so-\'
Ayra started to realize how different she was after everything that had happened. The old Ayra, who was a reckless woman who charged into battle even if it meant it was life-threatening, was no more. The current Ayra was a much more mature woman who wanted to stay safe and fight.
Meanwhile, Unami was helping Garnt, who was trying his best to stand up after the attack. As Unami knelt beside Garnt, she could see the grimace of pain on his face. "Easy, Garnt. Don\'t rush it. That tail hit was brutal," she said, her voice a comforting presence amidst the chaos.
Garnt winced as he tried to sit up, his hand pressing against his side where the impact had landed. "Thanks, Unami. I thought that tail was the end of me."
Unami glanced over her shoulder, her eyes falling on the fallen warriors who had shielded Garnt from the attack. She sighed, recognizing the sacrifice made for their leader. "They saved your life, Garnt. We need to honour that sacrifice and make sure their sacrifice wasn\'t in vain."
Garnt\'s gaze followed Unami\'s, but he didn\'t talk instead he kept looking at them with his eyes looking rather complex.
As Unami helped Garnt to his feet, he couldn\'t afford to dwell on it for long, though. Garnt took a deep breath and turned his attention back to the ongoing battle.
Unami spoke to Garnt, her eyes reflecting determination. "We need to get you patched up, Garnt. The villagers are in danger, and Ayra\'s doing her best to hold the line."
Garnt nodded, leaning on Unami for support. "Lead the way, Unami. I can\'t allow Ayra to get injured."
As they made their way towards safety to quickly recover, Garnt observed the approaching figures of Maro and Garo. The sight brought a brief smile to his face, a small glimmer of hope in the midst of chaos.
"Maro, Garo! We need your help," Garnt called out.
Maro, the loyal wolf, wagged her tail, ready for action. Garo, the dinosaur baby, made excited chirping sounds as it followed Maro.
