Chapter 35: Questionable business
Chapter 35: Questionable business
"Putting that aside... stone walls?" Terry frowned. "They have that kind of weapon and yet use stone walls?"
That was indeed weird. Everyone assumed that the enemies belonged to a sapient species, perhaps one of the smartest that humans had found until now with the technology of weapons they had, and yet...
Terry shook those thoughts out of his head when he reached the other side. The houses in the town didn\'t look particularly special either. They have the first floors made of brick and the top of wood...
Those illumination poles still were around at some points, but some houses still had a light inside, and since they had windows that didn\'t block the wind from outside, there was a chance that they would feel the smell of blood.
"Follow me," Vanessa whispered.
Vanessa chose a roundabout path using the dark parts of the down, where there was no light coming from the houses. Come to think of it, the number of houses was too large when around one thousand enemies were there. Terry didn\'t know if Vanessa had some skill when it came to feeling the enemy\'s presence, but nothing happened along the way...
After not so long, they found the town\'s largest building. It resembled a bit of a pyramid since it had a long staircase in the front, and it had that kind of shape overall... the entrance was only through that path. The entire building was made out of earth blocks, and there were no openings from the sides. Moreover, the long staircase was completely illuminated with the fire poles...
"There isn\'t anyone around... but the whole town will wake up once the fight starts," Vanessa declared. "Watch your backs."
Vanessa began to lead the group again, and then they began to climb the one hundred meters tall staircase. For a town so small, they sure used their time building such a grandiose structure...
Terry\'s bow only had 19 charges, and he couldn\'t imagine that being enough against the boss of those creatures. He had some magic stones with him, but even so... Terry imagined that the target\'s weapon and armor would be a lot better than the others.
It didn\'t take long for the group to reach the top of the structure since they weren\'t bothered. Still, they stopped for a short while once they saw the entrance and could feel a weird aura coming from it. Vanessa looked at the blue armor guy and another warrior, and they moved to open the entrance door of the building, which was made of stones, and it was ten meters tall... those weight tons...
When the door was opened, the whole group froze when they saw a room filled with cocoons... when they got close to it, they could feel something inside pulsating... something was already alive there... Terry ignored those even though he knew that the mechanical warriors were born from that. That explained their endless numbers... he ignored even that because he could see on the other side of the massive room a throne and something sitting on it.
That was their target, but the creature should have noticed their arrival and didn\'t move a single finger... it was hard to imagine that the thing was still sleeping...
Terry could tell that Vanessa was itching to use her best magic to attack. Still, she slowly led the group toward the enemy. Her spells were fast, but just to be safe, she could hit the enemy with one hundred percent accuracy if she got even closer. However, her cool disappeared when she saw some bodies behind the throne.
Female goblins, female orcs, corpses of other creatures that were hard to identify, and they were female. They looked like broken puppets that had been thrown away once they lost their use. Considering the number of cocoons around, it was easy to imagine what the boss of the monsters used them for...
"Come to think of it, I never saw those creatures that looked like females... they can only reproduce using other species, and they were sending the newborn warriors to cross the portal..." Terry thought.
Terry stopped his analysis when he saw a huge concentration of lightning bolts on Vanessa\'s hands. She was pissed, and so were the other women in the group. Being defeated in a war was one thing, but being used like that because of their reproductive functions... it was hard to imagine something even more humiliating...
Vanessa pointed both arms at the creature and then fired a powerful beam of electric energy at it. The noise probably woke up the whole town, but that was just a minor convenience. The group realized that when they saw at the last minute, the boss was raising a Spear and blocking the attack.
The attack was redirected to the side and then hit a pillar before making it fall. At the same time, the boss got up from the throne...
"It took you all long enough..." the boss said with a rough and crispy voice. "It is time to pay for the sin of dirtying my palace with your presence."
