Chapter 687: Fainted
Chapter 687: Fainted
"That went well." The butler commented as he helped the old Carter to his car."I hope Oliver will go through the contents of the envelope carefully. I do not want him to judge me as he had done three years ago." Jonathan commented, his eyes filled with an emotion that the butler was all too familiar with.
"Master...." The butler stopped suddenly as he pressed the divider, hiding their conversation from the driver.
"The event from three years ago is silently killing me from within. With no one to share this matter, only I know how painful it is to hide such a huge secret." Jonathan let out a defeated sigh and looked out of the window, his eyes clouded with thoughts.
He looked so crestfallen that the old butler did not know what to do and how to convince him. He just sat silently beside his master as he waited for the man to continue speaking. However, all he got in return was silence.
All of a sudden, the butler felt his hand being pressed hard and he turned towards his master, only to find his pale and sweaty face contorted his pain.
"Master, what's wrong?" The butler panicked and he moved closer to the man. "What's happening?"
"Pain...pain..." Jonathan clutched his chest and leaned back on his car seat as he dropped his walking stick.
"Master, take deep breaths. Try to breathe in and breathe out." He tried but Jonathan was too much in agony to listen to him and his eyes started to turn heavy. "Noah...call Noah..." He mumbled and the old butler had to lean closer to his lips to hear him correctly.
"I'll call the Young Master right away. Please stay awake, Master. Please stay with me." The butler did not hesitate to call Noah while at the same time, he lowered the partition and ordered the driver to rush to the hospital, scaring the man with his sudden instructions.
"Drive faster. Master is feeling unwell all of a sudden." The old butler barked and the driver stepped on the accelerator, forcing his way through the traffic.
By then, Jonathan had lost his consciousness and his head was lolling from one side to another.
"Master," The butler shouted in panic and helped him to lean on his shoulder as he kept calling Noah. "Why is the Young Master not picking up the call? Hello, Young Master." The butler let out a sigh of relief as soon as the call connected.
"There's something wrong with the Old Master. I am taking him to Doctor Davis. Please come over immediately." The butler cried and held onto his master tight as the driver drove like a maniac.
"What happened to Grandpa? Where are you?" Noah stood up in a panic, forcing everyone around him to stop speaking.
"I do not know what's wrong, Your Master. He has fainted now and is not responding to me. I am on my way to the hospital. Please come over immediately." The old butler was anxious. Yet he was able to convey his thoughts clearly.
"I will be there right away. Please take care of Grandpa. Don't let anything happen to him." Noah tugged his tie and walked out of the conference room with Ronnie right behind him.
"Damn it. Ian...I need to call Ian. Ronnie, we need to go to the hospital."
Ronnie had more or less guessed the situation and he bolted toward the parking lot immediately.
"Ian, pick up the phone. Please pick up the phone. Please." Noah begged, hoping against hope that the man would have his phone with him even if he was on his shift.
"Hello, Noah."
"Ian, there's something wrong with Grandpa. Please take a look at him. I'll be there shortly. Please save him. Please." Noah had no idea what he was speaking and words kept flowing out of his mouth in his worry.
"Noah, calm down. Calm down first." Ian attempted to calm the man. But it had no effect. Instead, Noah became all the more jittery and he kept muttering to himself, making it impossible for Ian to understand what was happening.
"Noah, calm the fuck down," Ian yelled, gaining the man's attention to him finally. When he was sure that his friend would not turn hysteric again, he continued, "Now, tell me. What happened to Grandpa?"
"I have no idea. He is on his way to the hospital. Please take care of him. Please save him. I'm on my way. I'll be there soon." Noah did not even wait for Ian's reply before he ended the call.
"How far away are we, Ronnie?" Noah kept tapping his foot in worry as he kept glancing outside the window.
"We'll be there in fifteen minutes, Boss."
"Go faster," Noah commanded, not caring that they were already crossing the speed limit within the city boundaries.
"Yes, Boss."
Although Ronnie managed to reach the hospital in twelve minutes, to Noah it was as though they had driven for eternity. He did not even wait for the car to stop. As soon as they reached the hospital, he jumped out and sprinted with all his might, not caring about anyone on his way.
"Where is my Grandpa? He held Ian by his shoulders, his eyes red with tears. "What happened to him? Is he alright?"
"Noah...Calm down. I am waiting for him. He is yet to...Give way. Move." Ian pushed Noah away lightly when he noticed the old Carter's car and ran out with the ward boys following him with a gurney.
Noah accompanied him and helped them move his grandpa from the car onto the gurney.
"Grandpa, please wake up. Please." He pleaded as he held his grandfather's palm tight. "I'm here. Your Noah is here." He cried. "Please wake up."
However, there was no response from the man. Other than the shallow but visible movement of his chest, it was impossible to say if he was even alive.
"Ian, please take a look at Grandpa. Why is he not responding to me? Why is he not talking to me?" By then, tears were gushing out of Noah's eyes and he did not care about what the people around him were thinking after seeing him that way.
Ian did not say a word as he checked the old man's pulse, his face turning serious as seconds passed. A frown marred his face and he stopped suddenly.
"Prepare for surgery. We need to operate right away. The patient had a heart attack and I'm afraid he might suffer from a cardiac arrest if we do not treat him right away."
