Chapter 635: Ian to the rescue - Part 1
"We are yet to find Deputy and Preston." Ryder did not hide the truth from her. Anyway, the entire world would know what happened to them in a matter of a few hours. And Maggie too would find out about it. So, he came clean with her immediately.Suddenly, an intense pain shot through his leg and he groaned in dismay. Ryder sucked in a deep breath and Maggie, who had been frozen in her spot, came out of her reverie immediately.
"Ryder, are you alright? Are you okay? Is the medical staff around you? Did you get yourself treated?" Maggie shot a series of questions at him, now utterly worried for him. Though she did not know what his state was, by the way his voice kept quivering and how he was trying to suppress his groans, only to fail at it miserably, she could make out that he was not fine. He could not hide his condition whatsoever and Maggie felt her heart almost stopping at the thought of Ryder being in danger.
Ryder smiled immediately on hearing the concern in her words. If this was not her love for him speaking, then what was? He did not need her to say the words explicitly to convey what she felt for him. These small gestures and words of care were enough for him to understand that he held a special part in her heart and she genuinely loved him.
He forgot all his pain for a moment as reveled in the feeling of being cared for by the woman he loved the most. He had been waiting for this day for a long time and it had only been fulfilled now. How could he not be happy and contented?
"Ryder? Why are you not answering me? Please say something." Maggie was worried and her voice rose an octave. Her voice was so loud that Ian who was looking at a patient's case in the living room lifted his head up, startled by the sudden shout in the silent room. It was especially garish and he frowned immediately when the familiar voice only turned louder as time passed.
Dropping his files on the tables, he wore his slippers before he climbed the stairs and walked in the direction from where he had heard the sound, his spectacles hanging low on his nose. His frown deepened when he saw Maggie just outside her room as she kept urging someone to answer her questions.
Even though her back was facing him, Ian could make out that the woman was crying and her voice kept breaking as he kept pleading with someone on the other side of the call.
Oblivious to Ian's presence, Maggie kept pleading with Ryder to answer him and eventually, she heard him speak to her after letting out a low cough.
"I am fine, Maggie."
"Don't lie to me, Ryder. I will not spare you if you lie to me." Maggie warned, not at all convinced by his words. "Tell me. What happened?" She ordered and Ryder immediately chuckled when he realized that she was showing her authority over him. Instead of being annoyed by her, he was only ecstatic about and he could not stop smiling even though he was still in agony.
"Fine. My leg hurts and I feel dizzy, and I do not know what happened. Maybe I injured my leg and head when the building exploded." He answered truthfully and Maggie sucked in a deep breath and she felt her world spinning. If not for Ian catching her right on time, she would surely have hugged the ground the next instant.
"Maggie," Ian shouted in alarm when he saw her body swaying as he ran to her quickly and held her gently but firmly and Ryder, who was smiling until a few moments ago, frowned immediately when he heard a familiar voice from the other side.
"Maggie, what happened? Are you alright?" He queried, his joy now replaced with worry and he straightened his body in fright. His thoughts ran wild and he imagined how Maggie would have reacted after finding out about him, Valerie and Preston.
'Did I commit a mistake by calling her?' He thought but shook his head the next instant. No. He did the right thing. Maggie had to know what had happened to her friends. Otherwise, she would blame herself as well as him for hiding such a huge matter from him.
Maggie was in no condition to speak. She kept sobbing quietly and Ian helped her to the floor. She did not seem to be in a state to even walk. She was shocked and her face had turned pale. All of a sudden, she looked sick.
"Maggie, are you alright? What happened?" He lowered his voice and asked her gently. But there was no response from the lady and Ian checked her pulse immediately to make sure she was fine. Other than her heart beating erratically, she was fine and Ian let out a sigh in relief.
He noticed that the call was still connected and she had been speaking to Ryder all this time. He had no idea what they had spoken. But from her reaction, it seemed to be anything but pleasant. He stared at Maggie before he took her phone from her hand and Maggie just looked back at him blankly.
"Hello, Maggie. Are you there? Can you hear me?" He heard Ryder's panicked voice while Ian kept his gaze fixed on Maggie, who seemed to have gone into a state of trance.
"Hello, I am Ian speaking. Maggie has gone into a state of shock. Did something happen?"
Ryder stopped speaking for a moment when he heard Ian's voice. "How is Maggie? Is she fine?"
"She is fine. She is just in a daze. She will come out of it soon. Did something happen? Why does she seem terrified?"
"That..." Ryder hesitated for some time. But eventually, he decided to tell the truth. Anyway, it was Ian who had brought Maggie back to them. So, he had no reason to doubt the man. "Jared tricked us again this time and..."
"And?" Ian's expressions turned dark at once. While one hand was wound around Maggie's back as he squatted beside her to keep her in place, the other clenched the phone tight.
"He escaped from us again."
