Chapter 272 - 272 Catching the Murderer
The one who spoke was one of the two women who had been crying on the ground.
Yue Jiaojiao’s line of sight was completely blocked by Zhao Zhan. She tilted her head and sneered at him.
“Are you jealous? This is normal. After all, my husband can’t bear to make me kneel on the ground in the middle of winter just to extort people. Do your knees hurt?”
The woman almost choked. Her eyes were red and she wanted to say something, but the cold and stinging pain in her knee made her instantly blame her husband for this whole situation.
“Oh?” Yue Jiaojiao let out a small cry, “Why aren’t you crying anymore? Your father-in-law has passed away. How can you still be in the mood to be jealous of others? Your actions don’t seem sincere… It’s alright. We have a physician here who can save a life better than building a seven-story Pagoda. Since my husband said that your father-in-law is still breathing, we can let the doctor take a look at him before jumping to conclusions.”
Doctor Sun had been forcefully dragged to town by Yue Jiaojiao. Now that something had happened, he was glad that he had followed them here today.
“Doctor Zhou is here!”
The two doctors looked at each other and tacitly squeezed through the crowd to diagnose the old man.
The young man who was standing guard beside the old man wanted to stop the two, but Yue Jiaojiao snorted and deliberately acted a certain way to garner the attention of others. “Zhao Zhan, he was talking smack about you just now and even called the two doctors quacks. Hurry up and hold him back.”
Zhao Zhan took a step forward and grabbed the man by the collar, restraining him.
“What are you guys doing?” The woman kneeling on the ground stood up and pounced over, reaching out to scratch Zhao Zhan’s face. “It was definitely the tofu in your shop that killed him, and now you want to take my husband too?”
Zhao Zhan pulled Yue Jiaojiao and moved to the side. Then, he pushed the young man in the woman’s direction and stood firmly in front of the two doctors, watching over them.
“Look at him!”
“If you shout again, we might as well go directly to the chief and let him be the judge.”
Yue Jiaojiao hated ignorant and incompetent men especially when they also bully their parents and wives. These types of people always act like tyrants in their homes.
“He might have been poisoned.”
Doctor Zhou and Doctor Sun confirmed this evidence with each other. Although they were worried about the two, they did not hide their diagnosis and stayed fair. “Let me go and test the poison. Doctor Sun is good at acupuncture, he will stay and treat you.”
“Isn’t my father dead?”
“Nonsense!” Doctor Zhou’s beard curled up in anger. “Are you even his son?”
He couldn’t say anything more unpleasant, so he just glared at the man, flicked his sleeves, and went into the shop.
“Zhao Zhan, help me raise his head a little.”
Doctor Sun’s expression was solemn, and he did not stop applying the thin needles. “Take out two pills from the green bottle in my medicine box and feed them to him.”
Yue Jiaojiao squatted down to help.
“Can he really be saved?”
“It looks like it. This doctor is a divine doctor from Willow Village. I saw him when I wanted to seek treatment.”
“The owner is so adamant about saving the man. Could it be that they really didn’t poison this person?”
The onlookers kept gossiping with each other and it was noisy.
“Everyone, stop with the assumptions. I know it might be fun to watch, but everyone, please stand aside. It’s not conducive for Doctor Sun to work well in this condition.”
Yue Jiaojiao usually spoke in a soft voice, so her throat hurt after she shouted, “I want to know the truth more than anyone else.”
She had abruptly woken up in the morning.
There was no reason for it, but her intuition told her that something was wrong. She became anxious when it was coupled with Madam Qin’s report that Zhao Zhan had gone to the shop that morning. She dragged Doctor Sun and took the ox cart to the town to quell her worries.
Fortunately, she came in time.
“Ahem.”
The old man who had been lying on the ground and breathing weakly coughed.
Zhao Zhan helped him up and patted his back. “Are you okay, sir?”
Doctor Sun pulled out the silver needles and stood up with difficulty with his hands on his knees. He hit his waist with his fists to promote blood flow. “This position is really tiring for me. Even if he’s conscious now, the residual poison has not been cleared. He will have to take medicinal herbs for seven days to remove the poison.”
“I don’t have pen and paper here. I’ll tell Doctor Zhou the prescription and then go to Herb Hall to get the medicine.”
The old man woke up and was shocked to see so many people surrounding him.
“What is-”
“Father!”
The young man had a bad feeling in his heart. He hurriedly pulled his wife and knelt in front of the old man. “You’re alive! You were poisoned after eating their tofu!”
“Stop with the blatant lies.”
Yue Jiaojiao was not angry. In any case, this kind of clumsy concealment could be easily exposed.
“Let’s not talk about the reason why the old man was poisoned. The old man is obviously still alive, but you didn’t save him. Instead, you impatiently said that he was dead and came here to make trouble. In my opinion, you’re clearly deliberately extorting people!”
Fang Tianliu and Li Xiangjun had been unable to help and were so anxious that they were fuming with the new progress. Now that they saw that the person was still chattering, they immediately started cursing the others.
“That was cruel and unscrupulous of you! Don’t you guys agree?”
“It seems so…”
“Sir,” Zhao Zhan had been observing the old man’s reaction. Seeing that he was in good spirits despite his pale face, he asked, “Did you eat anything else besides coming to my shop today?”
“When I got home, my son gave me a piece of cake.”
The old man was still a little confused and didn’t know what was happening. However, when he saw Zhao Zhan’s care for him and his son wailing beside him, he replied without thinking much.
“Did you finish it?”
“I couldn’t, it was too tough for me to chew it. I only took two bites and put it on the table.”
“Chen Xiaolang.”
...
“Yeah?”
Li Xiangjun interrupted, “I’ll take care of the girl.”
Chen Xiaolang might not be able to restrain the young man. However, with her strength, she could deal with the young woman.
“Xiangjun, I’ll go with you,” Fang Tianliu hurriedly said. “What if there are bad people hiding in their house? It’ll be dangerous for you to go alone. At the very least, I can hold on until you have enough time to run away.”
The matter was settled in a few words. The woman was unwillingly dragged away by Li Xiangjun’s grip.
“The tofu couldn’t have been poisonous.” Doctor Zhou walked over. “Besides, if the tofu was poisonous, the other customers would have fainted too. There’s no reason for this person to be the only one poisoned.”
“You all look familiar with each other, how would I know if you’re covering for each other? Anyway, the things in your restaurant are definitely not clean.”
The two voices were obviously deliberately shouted by someone else.
Zhao Zhan looked at Chen Xiaolang and raised his chin. The other party immediately and accurately dragged the person who had been hiding in the crowd. The person was none other than an old annoying acquaintance — Yu San.
“You have been pretending to spout nonsense this whole time. Tell me, are you guys working together?”
“Don’t make things up. I just don’t like Zhao Zhan. I don’t want him to live well. It has nothing to do with the poison!”
...
