Chapter 29: Annie’s Help
Chapter 29: Annie\'s Help
"Yo, what\'s with the drama?"
A slightly heroic female voice was heard, and two policewomen walked over from not far away. Pei Xin recognized one of them. It was Annie, who had recorded her statement at the hospital.
"Sir, have you forgotten about your previous incidents? Would you like to spend a night in the cell to remember everything?"
Annie held onto Lu Li\'s wrist. Lu Li didn\'t expect her to be so strong, so he quickly let go in pain.
"The audacity. Are you willingly meddling in family affairs now?" Lu Yu had already dealt with the last incident before the police could investigate Lu Li. As such, Lu Li wasn\'t worried that the two policewomen would do anything to him.
However, Annie\'s actions still made him feel embarrassed. He didn\'t know why, but he always paid extra attention to his superiority in front of Pei Xin.
"I\'m a police officer. What you\'re doing now is considered kidnapping and intentional injury. Why wouldn\'t I interfere?" Annie didn\'t care about Lu Li\'s threat and smiled at him. "Or should I call CEO Lu to confirm?"
Lu Li shivered when he heard Lu Huai\'s name. He couldn\'t control the fear that coursed through his body.
Pei Xin remembered that when they were in university, Lu Li often had crazy moments in front of her saying that Lu Huai was trying to suppress him in every aspect of his life. At that time, she had always thought that Lu Huai was worried that Lu Li would steal the family property and had felt sorry for Lu Li. Now, it seemed that he deserved it.
"Well then, are you leaving? Or are you waiting for us to give you a ride to the station? Based on the number of people here, I won\'t be able to bring all of you in one car. I suppose I\'ll have to call CEO Lu to pick you up as well."
Annie wasn\'t fazed when Lu Li looked at her with a warning look and hatred in his eyes.
Lu Li saw Annie take out her phone and unwillingly left with his bodyguards.
Pei Xin heard him whisper to her just before he left, "Just you f*cking wait!"
The current crisis had been resolved, but what would happen after that?
"Ms. Pei, are you alright?" As soon as Lu Li left, Annie stopped smiling and looked at Pei Xin with concern.
Pei Xin smiled and shook her head. "Thank you for stepping in! May I ask why you\'re here? Is there something wrong?"
"It\'s nothing serious. It\'s just about the case I was tasked to investigate. We\'ve done everything we could. We\'ve also interviewed all the participants that were present that night. However, there are some forces behind them backing them up. There\'s no evidence to prove that they molested and hurt you, so we couldn\'t bring you the justice you deserve."
Annie felt a little guilty, but sometimes, things were like this. Not everything could be resolved fairly and properly in this world.
Realistically speaking, Pei Xin did not expect any results either, but she did not expect Annie to be willing to do her best to help her investigate these rich kids and their complicated relationships. She felt a pang of appreciation for this cop.
"It\'s fine. Thank you very much for believing in me and being willing to look into this matter nonetheless!"
"What are you talking about? This is my duty!" Annie looked serious. "Although I can\'t punish them legally, I still managed to get some compensation for you. You know what they say, money makes the world go round... I suppose. Here, take this."
Annie took a leather envelope from the policewoman behind her. "Here\'s ten thousand dollars. It\'s the most I could get for you."
Pei Xin didn\'t expect that there would be compensation. She waved her hands repeatedly. "N-No, I can\'t accept this!"
Annie grabbed her hand and stuffed the envelope into her palm. "This is compensation for the harm they\'ve done to you. They\'re asking for your forgiveness. You deserve all of this and more."
Annie\'s hand was smooth and delicate, and the warmth of her palm was transmitted to Pei Xin\'s.
"Thank you... I don\'t..." She didn\'t know what to say except thank you.
Ling Jin had already come to Pei Xin\'s side. As the police were here to look for his sister, he had not spoken. Now that he saw his sister standing there with tears in her eyes, he quickly stepped in. "Thank you, officers. Please, come in and have a glass of water."
Other than water, there was nothing else they could serve at home.
Annie looked at the simple-minded Ling Jin and politely rejected, "There\'s no need, I have other work to do." She then turned to look at Pei Xin, "If Lu Li comes looking for trouble again, you can call me." As she spoke, she took out a piece of paper with a phone number written on it and handed it to Pei Xin.
"I-I don\'t have a phone." Pei Xin whispered. She used to have one. When she was released from prison, she carried a phone from many years ago in her backpack. However, in the pursuit of Pei Yu and Lu Li, the backpack had long disappeared.
"It\'s okay. Take it. You can ask your brother to call me. Besides, I\'m sure you get a phone sooner or later."
