Chapter 55 The Boy Who's Cold
Lucas entered a plain, but warm-looking living room that had only two windows facing the street. It had four double beds in the middle and one table in the centre supported by six chairs around it.
The fireplace that was connected to the kitchen was warming this place up, lightening with already lit candles and the smell of freshly made bread.
The floor was black and wooden, similar to the one in the weapon shop. It was making a squeaking noise as well, 'I guess all the buildings here are the same...' Lucas walked next to the first bed he saw.
He turned his face to everyone and gently placed the boy on the bed, "here, you can stay on this bed for now."
Lucas didn't bother to ask if he was allowed to stay on the bed or not, but he didn't care, since everyone seemed relaxed.
"What is this place?" Kali's eyes were wandering around.
What made Lucas more interested was the smell of the food coming out from the kitchen. They just got here and he was sure no one had the time to cook yet, so why was this smell coming out from there?
Being able to smell something tasty, his belly started rumbling from the inside in front of everyone. This was not embarrassing to him since he hadn't had food for such a long time. He deserved to feel hungry.
"Do you want to eat?" Asked Xina when she was cleaning the dust off the table with her fingertips. She wasn't even looking at him, but at the table.
"I would like to, but what about you?" Lucas didn't waste any time since he felt the hunger-fighting in his belly.
"We will eat with you." Haya pulled the chair from the table and placed his backpack on it, "this place is like a resting hideout, we can come here any time to rest, sleep and eat." He looked at Kali whose eyes were still glancing around.
"Is there any price?" Asked Lucas while scratching his cheek.
From his gaming experience, he knew that everything had its own price and from gaining one thing you would have to sacrifice another thing.
"No price, this place is unlocked for us." Said Haya when removing his long, black boots off his feet.
"Sit, it will be easier to do it," Xina spoke directly to him.
She looked confused and immature to Lucas sometimes, sometimes he wondered if she was the one here with a double personality.
Without thinking any longer, Lucas decided to sit next to the table, but first, he looked at Kali and gave her a small nod.
It was meant to tell her that it was safe to relax now as if no one was following them or trying to attack them.
This place indeed looked like a safe house to Lucas.
Judging by walls made of bricks and some small holes left in the windows it was still warm considering to what was happening outside. Lucas sat on a chair that was surprisingly very comfortable.
Haya sat next to him, while Xina and Kali were in front.
"What about the boy?" Asked Lucas turning his head back to see how he was doing.
But the boy sat there in silence, covered in two dark gowns given by Lucas and Kali, he wrapped them around himself and lied down like a hypnotised creature.
"Do you think this is ok to let him stay like this?" Kali spoke in a soft but worried tone.
"The food will be ready and Mirta will give some to him too." Haya stretched his fingers while looking at them.
"Who's Mirt..." Lucas stopped talking when he saw a woman in her forties start delivering food from the kitchen.
She wasn't saying a word to them but had a creepy weird smile on her face. She was a bit chubby and tall, taller than Lucas.
Her big breasts were concerning Lucas and it made him think of his science teacher from back home.
The woman was holding two different plates in her hands filled with freshly baked bread, 'is this poisoned?' The only thing Lucas managed to think was when he saw her placing it on the table.
She without a single word served two plates and went back to the kitchen, "Yes, yes, very delicious!" She came back talking in a high-pitched tone.
Lucas had shivers running through his body when she spoke. Her voice was irritating and annoying even to Kali who was holding her palms on her ears, trying to hide it from the sound this woman was making right now.
"Eat, eat!" She creepily smiled again.
The accent and dialect reminded Lucas that she was probably from Europe, as they usually would have such a strong accent.
"Haya, when will she stop smiling?" Asked Lucas turning his head away from her to the side where his teammate was sitting.
"Mirta is an extra, she will not bother for too long."
With Haya's words, this woman lowered her lips, placed her hands on her hips and walked away back to the kitchen.
"See, I told you."
Haya didn't wait and grabbed the first potato he saw in that place this lady brought, "don't wait till it gets cold, enjoy." He spoke while breaking this potato in half.
"I will give some to this boy too." Lucas turned away from him and stared at the four silver plates that were on the dining table.
One was full of freshly baked potatoes, another one had bread in it and the other two were filled with meat, "He should start with potatoes too." He grabbed two and placed it in his palms.
Lucas pushed the chair back and stood up from the table, approaching the boy who was lying on the bed like a frozen worm.
"Here, eat this," Lucas straightened his hand with two potatoes, "you will like it, it's food." He forced a smile while slightly closing his eyelids.
The boy leaned forwards Lucas and stared at the thing Lucas had in his palms, two nicely cooked potatoes looked like heaven in his eyes.
"Wi-will you ki-kill me if I eat this?" His voice cracked when he spoke.
